Student would call family and make them swear to tell the truth;

asked if any senior or friend had called.Brother states: “He often said those people are very powerful, we cannot do anything.

“The student used to prevent family members from even visiting the IIT campus.

Case involves the suicide of a B.Tech student in an IIT hostel.

GIN, Kanpur : In the case of the B.Tech student’s suicide at the IIT hostel, family members have raised suspicions of intimidation and threats. They revealed that the student was so terrified of someone that he would frequently call home to ask if any senior or friend had contacted them. If they denied it, he would insist, “Swear on Father’s name, tell me the truth.” When asked for a reason, he would simply say, “Those people are very powerful, but I will fix everything.” He even prohibited his family from visiting him at IIT despite repeated requests. The deceased’s sister, who is a doctor, has submitted a formal complaint at the Kalyanpur Police Station. After the post-mortem, the family left for their village with the body.Jai Singh Meena, a resident of Avadhpuri, Ajmer, was a final-year Biological Engineering student at IIT Kanpur. He resided in Room 148 of Hostel No. 2 with a roommate.

His elder brother, Dharmendra Meena, shared that Jai had come home for Diwali and returned after staying for 15 days. He previously had a ‘back’ (failed subject), which was cleared on December 4th. His mother, Tara Devi, was scheduled to go to her village on Tuesday and had a reservation, but Jai called her on Sunday night, saying he was coming home on Monday evening. He asked her to cancel the reservation, saying they would book fresh tickets and travel together.

Dharmendra stated that they cancelled the mother’s reservation accordingly. On Monday morning around 10:00 AM, they called Jai to discuss the new reservation, but he did not pick up.The family called more than 50 times, but the phone remained unanswered. Sensing something was wrong, they contacted other students. One student sent a peer named Vikas Meena to Jai’s room, but the door was locked from the inside. Despite several shouts, there was no response. Upon looking through the window, his body was found hanging from a bedsheet. Following the information, the IIT administration and the Kalyanpur Police force arrived. The police broke down the door and recovered the body. During the investigation, a cut was found on Jai’s wrist, leading to the estimation that he first slit his wrist before hanging himself.Dharmendra said that on Tuesday morning around 7:00 AM, he reached the post-mortem house with his sister Dr. Jyoti, cousin Parul, and her husband Narendra. Dharmendra revealed that for the past year, Jai would often call to ask if a senior or friend had phoned them. When they said no, he would make them swear on their late father’s name. When asked why he was asking, he would say, “I am fine, but those people are very powerful; however, I will handle everything.” The family was worried by these remarks and wanted to visit IIT, but he would get angry and strictly forbid anyone from coming there. Kalyanpur Station House Officer (SHO) Rajendra Kant stated that action will be taken based on the investigation of the submitted complaint.
