ICMR Recommends IIT Kharagpur–Backed HemoQR for Affordable Anemia Screening Across India

G-INews, New Delhi : In a major boost to India’s public healthcare innovation ecosystem, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has officially recommended HemoQR, a portable hemoglobin estimation kit developed with support from IIT Kharagpur.

The breakthrough device, created by SmartQR Technologies under the mentorship of Suman Chakraborty and incubated at advanced research hubs, marks a significant step forward in affordable and accessible anemia screening in India.IIT खड़गपुर और ऑयल इंडिया लिमिटेड के बीच बड़ी साझेदारी: कैंपस में लगेगा देश का अग्रणी ‘कंप्रेस्ड बायोगैस’ प्लांट

A Game-Changer in Point-of-Care Diagnostics

HemoQR is designed as a rapid, device-free solution for point-of-care testing. Using paper-based microfluidics combined with smartphone-enabled image analytics, the kit can estimate hemoglobin levels from a simple finger-prick blood sample within minutes. This innovation eliminates the need for bulky laboratory equipment, making it highly suitable for rural healthcare settings, mobile clinics, and community health programs.

Rigorous Validation and National Recognition

The device underwent extensive analytical validation at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, one of India’s leading clinical institutions.

Based on its accuracy and usability, ICMR has recognized HemoQR as:Suitable for anemia screening in hospital environments

An effective first-line screening tool in diagnostic workflows

This endorsement positions HemoQR as a scalable solution for tackling anemia, a major public health challenge in India.

Supporting National Health Missions

The recommendation aligns strongly with flagship government initiatives like Anemia Mukt Bharat and the National Health Mission. By enabling early detection and widespread deployment, HemoQR can significantly improve screening coverage, especially in underserved regions.

IIT Kharagpur’s Innovation Leadership

Speaking on the achievement, Prof. Suman Chakraborty highlighted that the success of HemoQR reflects IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to developing low-cost, high-impact healthcare technologies. He emphasized the importance of integrating academic research, clinical validation, and industry collaboration to address real-world challenges.IIT Kharagpur ki Badi Kamyabi: Parali ke Dhuein se Banega Green Carbon
