IIT Kharagpur Reimagines the “IITian” Experience with Landmark SETU Wellness Policy

G-INews, New Delhi: – In a move that signals a seismic shift in the culture of India’s premier technical institutes, IIT Kharagpur has officially launched its comprehensive Mental Health and Well-Being Policy. At the center of this transformation is SETU—a proactive framework designed to move the institute from crisis management to a “student-first” wellness ecosystem.

Launch of mental health policy

From Academic Rigor to Holistic ResilienceThe policy, unveiled on World Health Day by Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty, arrives as a direct response to the high-pressure environment synonymous with the IITs. By integrating mental health into the core institutional structure, the “KGP” community aims to prove that academic excellence and emotional well-being are not mutually exclusive.”Student welfare is a shared institutional responsibility,” the institute declared, emphasizing that technical proficiency is hollow without emotional resilience.

The SETU Framework: Four Pillars of ChangeThe SETU (Support, Empathy, Transformation & Upliftment) initiative serves as a “bridge” to connect students with resources long before a challenge becomes a crisis.

A “Digital & Physical” Safety NetIIT Kharagpur has ensured the policy is more than just a document by deploying a multi-channel support system available 24/7:

1. The SETU Digital SuiteStudents now have access to a dedicated SETU App, featuring a 24/7 SOS helpline, wellness tracking, and an AI chatbot for immediate resource navigation. For those seeking privacy, the app offers anonymous one-on-one chat options with professional counselors.

2. SARTH: The Physical HubThe clinical side of the policy is managed through SARTH (Students’ Assistance, Recovery, and Therapeutic Hub). Beyond private consultations, SARTH oversees “Gatekeeper Training,” a mandate requiring faculty and student leaders to undergo “Ask-Listen-Refer” training to identify peers in distress.

3. Radical AccessibilityTo ensure help is never more than a few feet away, the institute has implemented:

Hostel Barcodes: Every hostel room door now features a scannable QR code for instant helpline access.

Mobile Counselors: A team of 10 counselors roams hostels and common areas to provide informal, low-pressure support.

YourDOST Partnership: Free, 24/7 online counseling remains available for students off-campus.

A Blueprint for the FutureThe launch saw a rare gathering of multi-generational leadership, including former Director Prof. Partha P. Chakrabarti, signaling a unified front in tackling the mental health crisis in higher education. As other IITs and technical colleges watch closely, Kharagpur’s SETU policy stands as a bold blueprint:

a reminder that the most valuable asset in any laboratory or lecture hall is the human being within it.
