G-INews, Kanpur: IIT Kanpur has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the suicide of B.Tech student Jai Singh Meena. The team will be led by Dr. Dhananjay Chaudhary, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur.
Focus on Family Allegations and IntimidationThe Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Braj Bhushan, stated that if the family files a formal complaint or levels specific allegations against any individual, those will be included within the committee’s scope of investigation. This follows the family’s claims that Jai was being intimidated by “powerful people” within the campus ecosystem.
Key Details of the Investigation:
Mental Health Records: Jai Singh Meena had been a regular at the Institute’s ‘Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing’ for several counseling sessions. However, reports indicate he had not visited the center in the last few months.Academic Performance: Despite the family’s concerns, Jai’s academic record was stable with a 5.2 CPI. He was eligible for the upcoming placement process and could have started a career as a Junior Engineer under the National Education Policy (NEP) guidelines.
Scope of Inquiry: The committee will gather information regarding Jai’s academic journey and record statements from his friends, roommates, family members, and faculty.
Institutional Stand:Prof. Braj Bhushan noted that the student had never submitted any prior complaints to the institute administration. Furthermore, the family had not previously approached the Director’s office or faculty members regarding any threats or harassment Jai might have been facing.The high-level committee is expected to submit its detailed findings by next month, which will hopefully shed light on the circumstances that led the Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering student to take such an extreme step.
