India’s first 20-km Wireless Laser Communication system launched

G-INews, KANPUR : Pune Startup Demonstrates India’s First 20-km, 10 Gbps Wireless Laser Communication SystemPune,

India:In a significant boost to India’s indigenous deep-tech and defence communication capabilities, Pune-based startup olee.space has successfully demonstrated the country’s first 20-kilometre wireless laser communication system capable of transmitting data at 10 gigabits per second (Gbps).

The system, developed in just four months, uses free-space optical (FSO) communication technology, which transmits data through tightly focused laser beams instead of traditional radio frequencies or fibre-optic cables. According to the company, nearly 85 per cent of the components used in the system are Made-in-India, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Unlike conventional wireless networks such as mobile or Wi-Fi, laser communication offers ultra-high data speeds, low latency, and enhanced security, as the narrow laser beam is difficult to intercept or jam. This makes the technology particularly suitable for defence, space, disaster recovery, and secure strategic communications.

The successful 20-km field trial demonstrates the system’s stability, accuracy, and reliability under real-world conditions. Experts say such long-range, high-bandwidth wireless laser links could reduce dependence on fibre infrastructure in challenging terrains and enable rapid deployment of secure communication networks.Founded by a team of Indian photonics engineers, olee.space is working on scaling the technology further for military, aerospace, and commercial applications, including inter-building data links and emergency communication setups. The achievement marks an important milestone for India’s growing startup ecosystem, highlighting the country’s expanding capabilities in advanced photonics and next-generation communication technologies.
